Is Anyone Going To Notice The Left's Hysterical Hysteria Over Guns?

By Tony Katz
Wednesday, February 20, 2013

Somewhere a dentist is missing his laughing gas. Because the absolute hysteria of the American Left Intelligentsia on guns has now reached a new level of laughable. No longer (as if they ever were) engaged in serious conversation about mental health in America, the Hysteria-Merchants now find guns (and lawful gun owners) to be The Problem. They've gone mad. You gotta laugh.

While most can point to Piers Morgan's almost immediate crack-up on guns (always remember, Morgan never cared about people, their lives, and the kids at Sandy Hook. Morgan cares about ratings. Nothing else comes close,) people on both the local and national level have accelerated the race to the bottom on the concept of life, personal responsibility and mental health.

In Milwaukee County, Sheriff David Clarke made a Public Service Announcement telling the residents of the county that they should not rely on the police to protect them:

With officers laid off and furloughed, simply calling 911 and waiting is no longer your best option. You could beg for mercy from a violent criminal, hide under the bed, or you can fight back. But are you prepared? Consider taking a certified safety course in handling a firearm so you can defend yourself until we get there.

Two-time gubernatorial candidate and Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett thought that this was ridiculous. In an interview with Wisconsin Public Television, he chastised the Sheriff:

And to somehow suggest that the first option should not be calling 911, I think is going to put a lot of people in harm's way. If there is an emergency, I want people to call 911. But I think there's something else going on here. When did he come out with this PSA? He came out really at the time when people are focusing on whether or not there should be changes in our federal gun laws. He wants to change the conversation, and he wants to change the conversation from what I consider to be some common sense proposals.

The mayor, who is the co-Founder of Mayors Against Illegal Guns (Since when are they illegal? They're just undocumented!) thinks that being prepared is not a "common sense proposal."

(For the Leftist Intelligentsia who missed it: The White Mayor just told the Black Sheriff that he's stupid. I await your calls of racism.)

The Supreme Court disagrees with Mayor Barrett. In CastleRock v. Gonzalez, the court ruled (7-2) that the police department in Colorado could not be held responsible for failing to protect a woman and her family against her estranged husband. But Mayor Barrett knows better than the Sheriff and the Supreme Court. Lucky Milwaukee!

In Chicago, top law enforcement went the other way in a big way. (It's Chicago. Were you expecting anything else?) The Police Superintendent, Garry McCarthy, said that people who support gun rights - with their money, their voice or their votes - are guilty of "corruption and endangering public safety."

That. Is. Crazy. If we're going to take away guns, let's start with his!

According to Illinois State Rifle Association, this isn't McCarthy's first foray into the surreal. Previously, he blamed Sarah Palin (obviously!) and “government-sponsored racism” for Chicago’s violence problem. That is, to say, the 500+ gun murders in Chicago last year are the fault of a former Governor from Alaska who doesn't now and has never lived in Illinois, and not the fault of a Washington insider Mayor (Rahm Emanuel) who believes that good policy is to beg gangs not to shoot the children.

McCarthy also said, "the Second Amendment itself was a threat to the nation’s security." As Dana Loesch commented on RedState.com, "It’s a concerning prejudice against law-abiding citizens from an official who has the authority to arrest and give orders to fire at them."

Are you laughing yet? Well, hold on to your sides, because the anti-Gun Freedom Mob is just getting started!

David Frum took to the pages of CNN.com to explain how President Obama needs a "Plan B" on guns. It's important to note, before getting to his comments, that Frum is not a conservative. Frum is not an intellectual. David Frum is Meghan McCain 1.0.

What is Obama's Plan? (Other than demonizing Republicans for the economy, climate change, stubbed toes and Tony Romo's inability to win a playoff game?) He issued 23 Executive Orders that, essentially, throw those with mental health issues under the bus, interfere with doctor-patient relationships and have the Justice Department create lists of who has rights and who has "less than" rights. That's not a plan. That's a series of assaults!

Frum noted in his article - soon to be adapted for Chris Rock's opening act at The Laugh Factory - that one problem might be that guns don't come with an indicator light. Really:

So many gun accidents occur because guns almost never indicate whether a bullet is present in the chamber. A gun owner might remove the gun's magazine and believe the gun unloaded, when in fact it still contains one potentially deadly shot. Why not require guns to be equipped with indicator lights?

TownHall's Katie Pavlich summed it up best on Twitter:

This is one of the most bogus and ignorant columns out there about guns. Thanks @davidfrum!

You forgot hilarious, Katie. The first rule of gun safety: Treat Every Gun Like It Is Loaded! See, David, we all have an indicator light. It's called our brains. You just have to use it.

USA Today decided to enter the insanity-palooza on guns when country singer Mindy McCreary tragically took her life with a gun, after repeated failed attempts with pills. They attempt the following claim - if there were no guns, people would not commit suicide:

While guns are involved in just 5.6% of suicide attempts, they account for 55% of suicide fatalities. That's because 85% of suicide attempts involving guns result in death, making firearms the leading method of suicide in the USA, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. In comparison, taking pills results in death in 2% of cases.

Who comes up with this? Suicidal people by definition want to end their lives, and will do so by any means. But the issue is not guns or pills; the issue is the myriad of factors that lead a person to choose death over life. When will the Left have a meaningful conversation about mental-illness rather than using it as a bludgeon against lawful gun owners?

But every good comedy act needs a closer. And what better than Democrat Rep. Joseph Salazar of the Colorado state legislature. In a speech on the House floor, Rep. Salazar stated - clearly - that women don't need a gun to defend themselves. Besides, they're probably just overreacting, anyway:

It’s why we have call boxes, it’s why we have safe zones, it’s why we have the whistles. Because you just don’t know who you’re gonna be shooting at. And you don’t know if you feel like you’re gonna be raped, or if you feel like someone’s been following you around or if you feel like you’re in trouble when you may actually not be, that you pop out that gun and you pop … pop around at somebody.

Got that, ladies? The party that told you Republicans were engaging in a war on women thinks you're too hysterical to protect yourself. You may think that someone is out to rape you, when actually their just asking you for your Starbucks order!

The University of Colorado-Colorado Springs has other options for women's safety in case of rape or other attack, including:

•Tell your attacker that you have a disease or are menstruating

•Vomiting or urinating may also convince the attacker to leave you alone

Or, the liberal answer to the nuclear war strategy of "Duck and Cover"

•If your life is in danger, passive resistance may be your best defense

That's right. If you're being raped, just play dead. That should do the trick! Don't defend yourself, ladies. Chance it!

The Left is obsessed, and it's hilarious. So laugh at them! Because they don't care about people, they care about control. They care about gaining political advantage, not what will best safeguard a society against bad people, or helping victims of mental illness.
